Final Review

Not my favorite beer but it's not bad. I've never been much of a fan of German beers to start with. To me there just isn't much that is special about it. Between that and breaking my air lock and hydrometer in the same batch just put me in a bad mood. I might try to make this again.

Taste Notes

Very little hop character. There are some nice malty flavors and a yeasty taste/smell that is slightly spicy. The color is a nice copper.

Gravity Reading: 1.053

Pretty good brewday. I started the mash around 10 AM and put the fermentor up just before 2 PM so around 4 hours end to end. I used 1.5 qts/lbs for the mash (4 gal and 1 pint for mash and 3.5 gal sparge). The wort came just above the rivots on my fryer pot.

The boil wasn't very aggressive and in the end it came above the 5 gal line on my fermentor. With the loss due to the trub it should be pretty close to a 5 gal batch. Much better than my first all-grain attempt so far.

Both the pre-boil and post-boil gravity readings were 1.050 (before adjustment) which make me think the pre-boil was not correct. I didn't pay careful enough attention to the temp when taking that reading to do the adjustment. Post-boil was taken ~80 F which adjusts to 1.0525.

Gravity Reading: [Not given]

I've never seen a fermentation this active. Last night the airlock blew off the top of the fermentor. It shot right off and hit the ceiling breaking the neck of the airlock. I quickly cleaned off the other blow off tub and put it on. Throughout the night the bubbling was quite loud and made a rubble like a light thunderstorm. It's calmed down significantly today.

Gravity Reading: [Not given]

Bottled this up tonight. I'm a clumsy idiot and I broke my hydrometer so I didn't get a gravity reading. Smells malty and a little spicy. Kind of reminds me of a saison I made last year. Taste was not as impressive. Hoping the flavor develops as it ages.
